Visit an ancient wonder of the world – Chichen Itza
Appointed a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1988, then declared one of the New 7 Wonders of the World in 2007, once you see this archaeological site for yourself you’ll understand why it is the most visited Mayan Ruin in the area and second in all of Mexico! This vast Mayan city was constructed in phases providing the most diverse examples of Mayan architectural styles in one location. Chichen Itza was one of the Mayan World’s most important cities with an array of monumental buildings. The most famous is the Pyramid of Kulkulcan, with the Temple of 1000 Columns and the largest ritual ball court in Mesoamerica, The Great Ball Court, following close behind.
Your Yucatan tour is diverse and fun
We start the day early to avoid the midday heat and beat the tour bus crowds that descend upon this Mayan Ruin site. Chichen Itza has plenty to see and we want to make sure that you experience this fantastic site and all it’s splendor fully. Our goal is to create a different tour experience, an intimate excursion with friends that is fun, relaxing and educational.
A spectacular cenote and historic hacienda are next
No visit to the ruins in the Yucatan is complete without a way to cool off afterwards! The next stop on the itinerary is a visit to one of the areas amazing cenotes. The Yucatan landscape is unique and special with its abundant cenotes, fresh water filled sinkholes, or entrances to the regions subterranean river systems. These natural wonders are perfect for a refreshing swim. If you haven’t seen a cenote yet, you are in a for a surprise!
An authentic Yucatecan culinary experience awaits all of us at our next stop. This spread will make any foodie overjoyed. The combination of a historical setting, family recipes and fresh ingredients is hard to find anywhere else. Lunch is served in a historic and picturesque hacienda where you will enjoy a tempting selection of traditional Yucatecan dishes. Try their hand-made tamales, salbutes, and kebes or dig into Mayan specialties like Pollo Pibil, Cochinita Pibil, Lomitos de Valladolid, Escabeche de Pavo, Frijoles Charros all served with home-made torillas. Vegetarians have no fear, there will be plenty of tasty options for you as well!
Experience the colonial town of Valladolid
We end the day with free time to stroll around the quaint colonial town square (El Zocalo) of Valladolid. This historical city has the oldest church in the Yucatan, colonial Spanish architecture, family-run shops and wonderful crafts by local artisans. Take a few pictures, perhaps do a little shopping, a perfect conclusion to your Yucatan day.
One unusual sidebar to this tour is the often-requested stop outside the Valladolid prison. The prison is well-known for their quality hammocks. We have permission to view and purchase these hand-made hammocks, some of the best quality hammocks in the Yucatan. This is a program developed by the Federal government to assist in the rehabilitation of their prisoners!
